The Sony KDL-32EX603 – A First Review

This 32″ (81cm) LCD flat-panel TV is part of Sony’s BRAVIA line. It has many features, including a port for just about any external device you could hope to hook up to a TV: HDMI connections, a USB port, Wi-Fi capability, and more. Best of all, the Sony KDL-32EX603 it has innovative eco-friendly features that can save a huge amount of energy.

The TV comes with a table stand that swivels 20 degrees in either direction. It also comes with equipment and instructions for mounting the TV onto a wall, although you may want a professional to install it.

The 32″ LCD screen is backlit by LEDs, which gives the picture a much higher contrast and also happens to use less energy than traditional backlight technology. The TV is HD-ready with a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. The screen’s default aspect ratio is 16:9, although there are various options for customizing this, including a “Smart Mode” which automatically detects and adjusts the display to match the program being viewed. A feature called

There are two powerful built-in speakers, using 10W of energy each, and they are equipped with a Dolby Digital sound system, digital amplifier, and Surround Sound capability. There are several different ways of customizing the sound quality as well, including a convenient option called “Steady Sound, ” which stabilizes the channel volume so there are no dramatic changes in volume between programs and commercials.

As mentioned earlier, you can hook up just about any external device to this TV. Of course, there are the standard audio/video inputs for things like DVD players. But in addition, you will find four HDMI connections, one USB port (capable of playing back photo, video, and music files), a PC input, and an input for a wireless adaptor to connect to Wi-Fi.

And last but not least, there are several energy-saving features included on this TV. The LED backlight technology starts things off, but then there is also a category of option on the TV menu called “Eco Settings.” Here you will find innovative features like the “Energy Saving Switch, ” which allows power to be cut off completely when the TV is turned off. Without this feature, the TV, like almost all other electronic devices, would continue to use a significant amount of power unless unplugged from the outlet completely.

Another smart option is the “Ambient Sensor, ” which automatically adjusts the screen’s brightness depending on the amount light in the room. The “Presence Sensor” detects when you leave the room and it will turn off the screen (but not the sound) to save energy. When it detects your return, the screen will turn back on.

Less impressive but equally important are the more basic energy-saving option in the sleep timer, the auto-off function, and options for switching the TV to Standby Mode. The TV is capable of consuming up to 80W of energy while in use, whereas Standby Mode uses a mere 0.2W. And these are the features you need to know when considering the Sony KDL-32EX603.
