The Evolution of the Trumpet

The trumpet, an instrument of the woodwind or brass collection, is usually composed of brass or bronze and includes: a mouthpiece, horn end, a spit valve, and buttons. Trumpets are instruments operating fully chromatic because trumpets contain three different buttons for tone adjustments. Some can also be built with a a trigger mechanism to correct unwanted sounds by the use of the main note buttons. This line can be pulled while the musician is playing and the change is so smooth that you cant even tell the difference. The spit valve is included to clear any mucus that has made its way into the trumpet. The history of trumpets is fascinating and they go long back in time; as far back as 2000 B.C.

The melody of trumpets are created by the collision, inclusion, or synthesis of the three top keys. The sound generated is achieved through the vibration of the musician’s lips on the mouthpiece and then manipulated by the keys before the air makes it to the horn, or end, of the trumpet. The collision of combinations of tones became more and more important to the exploration of certain types of music. Because the keys can be changed to produce any sound, all kinds of music has been known to include a trumpet in certain circumstances.

The trumpet by nature, is pitched specifically for the soprano range of tones. This means, the chromatic range of sounds made go from F sharp all the way to C – before the clef responsible for treble generation. Though, the broad range of options for trumpets are not held to that range in tones; some belt out notes in the G and high C area.

Trumpets, like other instruments, come in many styles and brands. Some are preferred over others. Also, because of this, they vary widely in dollar range. And, some have other capabilities in pitching that do not come standard. Some of the better known kinds of trumpets include:

Piccolo, Brass, Herald, Natural, Slide and Bronze

This incredible instrument was invented in 2000 B.C. where it was used in religious service. The first kinds included things they found to make noise, like: a length of bamboo, or antler, or bone. The bible contains many references to these instruments and they were discovered in the casket of the acclaimed Egyptian King, Tutankhamen. From the 14th century, someone invented the folded trumpet that is like trumpets of today wherein the metal tubes are folded and arched from bell to lip position. The beginning of these instruments was merely straight and longer with a bell on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. During opera days, the trumpet was put to the stage in 1607 during a famous Opera called Orfeo. In time, trumpets were used for military communications but were later seen as a musical instrument. In the 19th century, these instruments became the primary instrument for symphony orchestras. Today, the trumpet can be seen in jazz productions, military bands, marching bands, and sometimes rock groups.
