Danny Boy: Ambitious although arrogant, unrelentingly dull melodrama of sax player Rea, who trades his sax for a gun after observing a triple killing. This was Jordan’s directorial debut, which he additionally did the screenplay. He and leading guy Rea later reteamed for The Weeping Game. (92 minutes, 1982)
Hold That Ghost: Prime Abott and Costello, with the boys inheriting a haunted home. Fine cast contains humorous Davis as virtuoso stereo screamer. A highlight is the moving candle. Trade: A thirteen-year-old gal is kidnapped by members of a sex-trafficking ring. As her older sibling follows her track, he hooks up with a Texas cop (Kline) who has his own rationales for chasing this outfit of bad guys. Downbeat drama reveals a stunning, debasing circumstance, although it’s maddeningly choppy, one second daring and commanding (particularly with Finnish actress Bachleda) and the next remarkably corny. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Alicia Bachleda, Paulina Gaitan, Kathleen Gati, Pasha D. Lychnikoff, Anthony Crivello, Linda Emond, Zack Ward, Cesar Ramos, Marco Perez, and Tim Reid. (120 minutes, 2007)
Great Guns: Later Laural and Hardy Army comedy is weak, not as poor as some although far underneath their classic films. Cast includes Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Sheila Ryan, Dick Nelson, and Edmund MacDonald. (74 minutes, 1941)
Nutcracker the Motion Picture: Much of this rendition of The Nutcracker, acted by the Pacific Notthwest Ballet, is like a music video with rapid cutting and close-ups of legs, faces, and elbows. This is extremely irritating. However the Tchaikovsky music is, obviously, amazing, as are Maurice Sendak’s sets and costumes. Cast includes Hugh Bigney, Vanessa Acute” Patricia Barker, Plod Walthall, Russell Burnett, and the voice of Julie Harris. (89 minutes, 1986)
Deep Red: There’s style to burn in pointless terror thriller with Hemmings on the trail of a sadistic psycho murderer. Showy, weird scenes set to beating rock soundtrack. Cast includes David Hemmings, Daria Nicolodi, Gabriele Lavia, Macha Meril, and Glauco Mauri. (98 minutes, 1975)
Dillinger and Capone: In 1940, discharged from prison, Al Capone (Abraham) holds the family of John Dillinger (Sheen) for ransom. Al desires the bank robber to recoup 150,000 dollars of Capone’s monies from a hotel in Chicago. The clever plot is increased by smooth acting jobs, although it eventually skids into a basic heist thriller. Cast includes Martin Sheen, F. Murray Abraham, Stephen Davies, Catherine Hicks, Don Stroud, Sasha Jenson, Michael Oliver, Jeffrey Combs, Michael C. Gwynne, Anthony Crivello, Bert Remsen, and Clint Howard. (94 minutes, 1995)
